Thursday, May 15th, 2008

2 Skinnee J's Return of the New and Improved imageThis is one of greatest albums of 2 Skinnee J’s. Rikki Toldo has compared writing for 2 Skinnee J’s’s new album to that on ‘Return of the New and Improved’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. There is no doubt that 2 Skinnee J’s has talent and Return of the New and Improved is great.Return of the New and Improved touched my soul like nothing else.

Mind Trick is really a nice song to relax and listen too. You’re A Champion - My least favorite song on this album. Skinnee Business is one of those songs that will put you in a good mood. This song is dynamic and dramatic.

The Ohio Players Funk on Fire- The Mercury Anthology Disc 1 imageThe Ohio Players is work hard for Funk on Fire- The Mercury Anthology Disc 1. There is no doubt that The Ohio Players has talent and Funk on Fire- The Mercury Anthology Disc 1 is great. Now signed to The Ohio Players’s Artemis Records, the title track from second album “Funk on Fire- The Mercury Anthology Disc 1″ leads The Ohio Players’s back-to-school campaign. If you want to hear real funk, get this record now!

Jive Turkey is a bit of a show-tune. Heaven Must Be Like This presents the perfect mix of instruments on Funk on Fire- The Mercury Anthology Disc 1. The song feels complete. The sound of Together is difficult to describe, as it seems to squirm in a sensual manner, unlike anything ever created. I Want to Be Free is such a astounding and optimistic song that things can get just better. It’s All Over is possibly the best song The Ohio Players has come up. Piano Ballad (Just Right) is a great opener for Funk on Fire- The Mercury Anthology Disc 1. Fopp is new, fresh, and hypnotizing. Sweet Sticky Thing gives taste of what makes The Ohio Players special as a musician. This song may be the most meaningful. Honey is an underrated song: I like its lyrics and melody a lot. There It Is - A strong beat. Happy Holidays, Pt. 1 & 2 (8:23) - Oh, this is one of my favorites!

Sly and the Family Stone Dance to the Music imageOn the Canada charts, superstar Sly and the Family Stone’s career stalled before it left the starting gate. On Dance to the Music album, Sly and the Family Stone have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. After seeing Dance To The Music, I had to have a good Sly and the Family Stone CD. Dance to the Music is the best album I have heard in a long time

Higher gives taste of what makes Sly and the Family Stone special as a musician. I Ain’t Got Nobody (For Real) to me is the best you can get from Sly and the Family Stone. Dance To The Medley: Music Is Alive/Dance In/Music Lover is absolutely incredible. Ride The Rhythm is beautiful, yet underrated track. Color Me True is really a nice song to relax and listen too. Are You Ready - A nice song. Don’t Burn Baby - My least favorite song on this album. Music and lyrics of I’ll Never Fall In Love Again creates, for me, fertile ground for daydreaming. Soul Clappin’ is perfect.

There is no doubt that Donald Byrd has talent and His Majesty King Funk: Up with Donald Byrd is great.Blind Man, Blind Man - Donald Byrd and Boom, Boom - Donald Byrd is really good.

This is probably my favorite song on the album. This track is full of harmonies and gets His Majesty King Funk: Up with Donald Byrd off to a relaxing start. Cantaloupe Island (Unedited Version Of Master Take) - Donald Byrd is so unique, as each one of the songs is. Daddy Grapes - Grant Green is one of the most beautiful songs ever to grace my stereo. It’s also one of those rare songs that touchingly comfort the listener. Although I prefer the faster paced music, I think My Babe - Donald Byrd is my favorite song on His Majesty King Funk: Up with Donald Byrd. See, See, Rider - Donald Byrd rocked my world when I popped it into my car stereo. The Selma March - Grant Green can be hardly overrated by any means; this is what Donald Byrd is all about. Incognito 100 and Rising imageIt has been four years Incognito’ last studio CD, “100 and Rising” which won Meteor Music Awards and was nominated for album of the year. Great album 100 and Rising - just must listen it! There is so much to love about Incognito, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. 100 and Rising is one of the best cd’s i have heard through the whole thing.

Good Love presents the amazing mix of instruments on 100 and Rising. The sound in One Hundred And Rising is really warm and Incognito’s signature voice is still very much present. I like the agression and power of Roots (Back To A Way Of Life). Everyday - This one is what it is: a powerful, primal invitation to love. I love the melodic melody of Too Far Gone and to this day it makes me feel good. After The Fall - To me, this is the best song on the 100 and Rising. Spellbound And Speechless is outstanding work of Incognito. In this song fans will recognize the unique vocals of Incognito. Barumba to me is the best you can get from Incognito. Millenium can be hardly overrated by any means; this is what Incognito is all about. Time Has Come I just LOVE this mix! Jacob’s Ladder is one of those songs that will put you in a good mood.

Steve Coleman and Five Elements Def Trance Beat (Modalities of Rhythm) mp3

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

Steve Coleman and Five Elements Def Trance Beat (Modalities of Rhythm) imageIt’s natural for Steve Coleman and Five Elements to take a stab at ‘Dogon’ considering her long-professed love for Five. Self-described as funk with lots of words, Steve Coleman and Five Elements comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. Steve Coleman and Five Elements is work hard for Def Trance Beat (Modalities of Rhythm). I greatly enjoyed this CD.

Flint is simply perfect. Jeannine’s Sizzling is probably the highlight of the album. Multiplicity Of Approaches is a medium tempo tune. Pad Thai gets you up and jumping. This track, in particular, has the kind of undeniably catchy flavor. Salt Peanuts was the first single release from the album Def Trance Beat (Modalities of Rhythm). Vocals of Steve Coleman and Five Elements in The Khu really capture me and are set perfectly to the rhythm. The Mantra is perhaps one of the best tracks of the past decade. Verifiable Pedagogy has a fun tempo.

James Brown Get on the Good Foot mp3

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

James Brown Get on the Good Foot imageIt has been six years James Brown’ last studio CD, “Get on the Good Foot” which won Billboard Latin Music Awards and was nominated for album of the year. On Get on the Good Foot album, James Brown have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. It’s a brave and brilliant refocusing of James Brown energies, virtually a rebirth. To me James Brown is the best ever.

This track is full of harmonies and gets Get on the Good Foot off to a relaxing start. Blew our minds when we first heard Dirty Harri. Funky Side Of Town is flawed, nonetheless pretty good song. Get On The Good Foot (Parts 1 & 2) is another strong production from James Brown. I Got A Bag Of My Own (3:31) Not one of my favorites, but for a lot of people this is one of their best songs. A great put together song. From the moment you listen to Lost Someone you’re hooked. My Part/ Make It Funky (Parts 3 & 4) - I like this one. Voice and instruments in Nothing Beats A Try But A Fail complement each other. Please, Please, Please - is a breath or fresh air compared to many previous songs of James Brown. Recitation By Hank Ballard is a song that takes you on the journey before it reaches the conclusion. No James Brown song has come close to capturing my attention as The Whole World Needs Liberation did. Your Love Was Good For Me is filled with very deep emotions that will truly touch your heart.
